Through a grant from University of Kentucky Human Development Institute (HDI)’s Wellness Edge, IDEAS xLab (Louisville) and CDC Disability & Health Kentucky State funded Project CHEER (Lexington) partnered to create Universal Art, which supports people with disabilities including individuals with paralysis and their friends and family or staff through virtual arts lessons created with self- advocate artists!
The program was initially designed to include a series of in-person arts activities across Kentucky, and was adapted to a virtual set of arts tutorials by artists with paralysis when COVID-19 required that we adapt the program based on the recommendations of public health officials.
Use the tutorials to create a piece of art? We’d love to see it! Tag @ideasxlab on social media and use #UniversalArt when posting!
"So often times recreation is focused on physical activity, we often forget that artistic outlets are just as important for one’s health and well-being. This is why we are so excited to partner with IDEAS xLab on this effort and working to promote opportunities for individuals with disabilities and people who support them to explore art as a healthy outlet while encouraging other opportunities for inclusion in community programs.” Lindsey Mullis, Inclusive Health & Wellness Director, Project CHEER.
