Call for Performers: Journeys to Freedom River Cruise

THE PRODUCTION:

Journeys to Freedom: (Un)Known Project River Cruise is an immersive experience commissioned by IDEAS xLab and written and directed by Sidney Monroe Williams (they/them) that will take place aboard the Belle of Louisville. 

While floating along the Ohio River between Kentucky -- a slave state -- and Indiana -- a free state -- participants will be immersed in the stories of two families seeking to escape enslavement by boat.

When boarding the Belle for the river cruise, each guest will receive a color-coded passport and be assigned a persona for the event. The passport will give different passengers access to various spaces throughout the boat as the performance progresses.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

We are hiring actors for June performances.  Rehearsals will be in-person and follow Covid guidelines.  Qualified candidates should have performance experience and some familiarity with improvisational acting.  We seek to cast a diverse/dynamic/inclusive ensemble with special attention to Kentuckiana’s (un)known histories. 

Duties/Responsibilities:

●   Dates of Contract:    11 MAY – 30 JUN 2022

○   Rehearsals:     11 MAY – 30 JUN 2022 (evenings & some weekends)

○   Performances:   09, 10, 22, & 23 JUN 2022

○   Wrap up:        27 JUN 2021

●   Collaborate with an ensemble of actors and production team.

●   Respond to production communication within 24 hours.

●   Come to rehearsals on time and prepared.

●   Maintain a professional attitude.

Available Roles/Character Breakdown:

·       Rufus: Caribbean and/or Indigenous; male-identifying; charming, cunning, and callous; age 30-40.

·       Beverly: Black; female-identifying; street-smart, bold, and resilient; age 20-30.

·       Frannie: Bi-racial; female-identifying; impulsive, articulate, and passionate; age 20-30.

·       Buster:  Bi-racial male-identifying; sheltered, innocent, intuitive; age 10-12.

·       Newt:  Black; non-binary identifying; divine, graceful, and ancestral; age 20-30

·       Brotha:  Black; male-identifying; brave, musical, and protective; age 15-20.

·       Sista:  Black; female-identifying; attractive, musical, and assertive; age 15-20.

·       Sampey:  White; male-identifying; hardworking, lonely, adapts quickly; age 15-20.

Compensation:

●   $20.00 an hour for rehearsals/performances
